Michael Stevenson, 38, lived in La Grande, Oregon, and was an employee of the local Les Schwab Tire Shop. One morning, as he was working out of the line of sight on a log truck, someone jumped into the truck and turned on the ignition. The truck rolled, dragging Michael up and into the wheel well. Paramedics transported him as a Code 3 (lights and sirens) to Grande Ronde Hospital. He was in grave condition.
During his initial treatment, Dr. Steven Delashmutt and Dr. Hamre found he was bleeding profusely from an extensive scalp wound and internally from multiple other injuries. After emergent surgery in La Grande to control the bleeding, he was transferred to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center by air ambulance. Michael’s injuries included a large degloving wound of his scalp, internal injuries, facial fractures, multiple spine fractures, spinal cord injury, as well as many fractured ribs and multiple orthopedic fractures.
Michael underwent several surgeries from numerous specialists, including OMFS (Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery), Neurosurgery, Orthopedic, and General Trauma Surgery. He currently lives in Gearhart, Oregon with his family. Although life is different now, Michael is grateful to have lived through this event. His upbeat and gracious demeanor continues to inspire his friends and family.
