Purpose

To identify and contract with one group in each specialty committed to provide Level 1 trauma care, as defined by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and the Oregon administrative Rules. This commitment helps to assure coordinated focused care for the trauma patients.

Availability To The Trauma Patient
The contracted specialty group must provide immediate availability to the trauma system patient 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The specialty group may subcontract to other surgeons.

Certification By The American Board For That Specialty
This commitment assures that each member of the contracted group maintains current knowledge and skills in that specialty as defined by a national certification examination.

Continuing Medical Education In Traumatology
This commitment assures that each member of the contracted group obtains at least 16 hours of category 1 medical education from national experts of trauma research and patient management in that specialty.

Participation In Trauma Center Performance Improvement (PI) Processes
Because most trauma patients have multisystem injuries, national standards for PI in level 1 trauma centers dictate that all specialties be represented in a trauma PI committee to discuss problems with trauma care, coordination, patient management, and systems issues involving hospital resources and staff.

Education And Training In Trauma Management Provided for Fellows, Residents, Physician Assistants, and Nurses
The next generation of health providers must be aware of and exposed to trauma systems functions, trauma center operations, and trauma patient management. Each member of a contracted group must be a member of the teaching staff, committed to education and training.

Support Of OR Participation In Trauma Research Activities
Members of each contracted group and subcontractors must participate in clinical trauma research activities. Group members can be primary investigators in clinical research.

Group members are encouraged to develop basic science research methodology in trauma, and TS, LLP will support in part the Laboratory that meets and obtains peer reviewed extramural funding for basic science research.

All contracted groups will support TS, LLP efforts in Trauma Prevention Research and Legislative Policy formulation for Trauma Systems, Trauma Centers, and Trauma prevention.
