In April 2003, while squirrel hunting in a remote area of Lakeview, Josh Charlton’s gun accidentally discharged, striking him in the abdomen. In critical condition upon arrival at Lake District Hospital, Dr. Bomengen and a great team began attempts to stabilize Josh, while Klamath Falls surgeon Dr. Tuttle drove there to assist. The Lakeview Community rallied and over 65 people gave blood. Legacy Emanuel’s Mobile Surgical Team arrived to help and to fly him back to Portland.
Josh’s supportive family was glad for his return home and to school. Reader’s Digest has featured Josh and Dr. Bomengen. As Josh says, “I am very grateful that I have my life. Words cannot express the gratitude that I have for everyone who put forth the extra effort for me and worked as a team in my critical situation.”
